I was jarred awake by a huge explosion followed by the deafening roar of a full force hurricane that terrified me - or was it just a nightmare? I poked my head out of our tent only to get bitten by a blast of very cold air. An avalanche had calved off megatonnage of rock, ice and snow from a hanging glacier and it was cascading about 2,000 feet down a sheer rock face closeby. As the airborne spindrift subsided, the sky became velvety black once again, and it was punctuated by millions of sparkling diamonds. Whow, I remembered I was in Everest Base Camp.
